Space Traveler Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured leaders in different industries.
