Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
