As stated by a senior defense spokesperson, the American military carried out a lethal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”
Background and Recent Actions
The statement comes a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Only on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Tactics Amidst Pressure
The administration has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to confirm a broader political aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the leader “aims to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
